Thinking of testing the iOS 17 public beta? From the new Smart View mode to new health features, interactive widgets to the new Messages experience, live voicemail to offline Apple Maps and more, here are the top 10 iOS 17 features you should try.

Update 8/28: At this point in the beta period, iOS 17 is fairly stable, so it’s a great time to enjoy all the new features ahead of the official launch without sacrificing stability.

iOS 17 has been in developer testing since early June, and the public beta launched in July.

But it’s still a beta version, so don’t forget to take an iOS 16 backup for your iPhone in case you want to downgrade. That said, I haven’t encountered any major issues in the last two months of testing iOS 17.

Alright, let’s dive into the best iOS 17 features!

iPhone standby mode

Apple enhances the lock screen experience in iOS 17 this year with the new Landscape StandBy mode for iPhone.

Some of the available options include customizable dual-view configurations, while others have different clock faces that take up the entire screen. Find out all the details in our full walkthrough:

Contact posters

Another effective way iOS 17 gets more personalization is Contact Posters. There are many ways to create different designs and you can make them for yourself as well as for others.

Live voicemail

Real-time voicemail makes it easy to know if you want to take a call while someone is leaving a message without having to call them back.

Personal voice

Personal Voice is an impressive feature that allows users to keep their voice in case they lose it in the future. Whether you suffer from a degenerative disease or just want to be prepared, Personal Voice makes it easy for you to create and securely store a replica of your voice.

Offline Apple Maps

Want to save battery or you won’t have a connection where you’re going? With iOS 17 you can download Apple Maps for offline use.

Shared passwords

Sharing your password with anyone or any group is easy with the ability to create shared iCloud Keychain vaults.

Automatically delete 2FA codes

Simple and very useful, iOS 17 can automatically delete texts of 2FA codes after using them.

Interactive widgets

Widgets get a nice upgrade with functionality right on your Home screen or lock screen. Here they are in action with the Home app widget.

Message stickers and new UI

Instead of limiting emoji responses to six tapback choices, with iOS 17 you can respond to any text or image with a custom emoji or sticker.

Besides that, there’s a new UI for iMessage apps.

Screen distance

This is a new eye health feature that helps prevent eye strain for all ages and helps reduce the likelihood of myopia in children.

It’s easy to set up and very effective.

Ok, a bonus feature. But this requires signing up for an Apple developer account and installing Xcode on your Mac (which is free but more complicated):

Adaptive audio of AirPods Pro 2

With iOS 17 comes a host of new features for AirPods Pro that feel truly magical. Take a closer look at adaptive audio with AirPods Pro 2.
